Machinist to seek damages for hand injury?

A serious hand injury sustained during an accident at work could lead to a machinist seeking compensation from his employer.

Hugo Valdes Vera lost part of three fingers when his left hand got trapped between two heated platens as her operated a multi-platen door press as part of his duties while working at premises owned by SIG Manufacturing in Derbyshire in February 2010.

The 37-year-old was loading and unloading doors with a colleague at the factory and an investigation conducted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) established that no guarding had been installed at the back of the equipment.

As a result of this accident, Mr Valdes Vera requires continuing hospital treatment and has not yet been able to return to his job.

Noelle Walker of the HSE observed: "This case demonstrates the importance of providing physical safety measures where they are practicable."

This comes after Ellen Yardley suffered a broken finger when her hand got caught in machinery while she worked for Thorntons.
