Woman wins medical negligence compensation

Medical negligence compensation has been awarded to a woman who suffers stomach pain due to complications arising after a routine surgical procedure involving a gall stone.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Paula Thomas underwent the operation at the Methley Park private hospital - which is managed by Spire Healthcare, an organisation with 37 institutions nationwide - in 2005.

Because of the negligence of consultant surgeon Paul Curley, Ms Thomas' bile duct was damaged, leading to her have an emergency procedure to remove seven litres of bile from her body, although she still suffers from stomach pain six years on.

During a case at the High Court, it was noted that the woman could have died due to this accident and she was therefore awarded a sum of £92,000 in damages for her ordeal.

Mr Curley denied that his error had caused this health issue, but this claim was dismissed by Mr Justice Griffith Williams.
