Medical negligence compensation totalling £14,000 has been awarded to the family of an elderly man who passed away after being incorrectly discharged from hospital.
According to online resource This is Staffordshire, 73-year-old Cecil Dean was allowed to return to his nursing home from the University Hospital of North Staffordshire despite suffering from pneumonia.
Consequently, the former lorry driver died of the illness three weeks later in January 2010 and chiefs at the institution have accepted liability for this error, resulting in the six-figure damages award to his family.
Yvonne Dean, the pensioner's widow, commented: "How Cecil was treated was shocking ... we couldn't believe the hospital sent him out in such a state."
She went on to note that the establishment did not provide Mr Dean with the necessary drugs after sending him home.
This comes after the Manchester Evening News reported that Paula Thomas won a settlement of £92,000 from Spire Healthcare after a botched routine operation left her fighting for her life in 2005.
