Construction workers may seek asbestos compensation

Employees working at a well-known high street retailer could consider suing their employer after being potentially exposed to an asbestos-related illness in the workplace.

It has emerged that the Arcadia group - which has more than 2,500 outlets across the country in the form of well-known brands such Miss Selfridge, Burton and Dorothy Perkins - is jointly liable with Vincents Shopfitters for putting workers at a branch of Topshop in Liverpool at risk of diseases such as mesothelioma.

Vincents was called upon to complete some refurbishment work in the store but it was later found that the company had endangered construction workers by coating and spraying sprinklers, air conditioning systems and other equipment with the substance.

Work on the project was therefore suspended, but employees had already been exposed to asbestos and could therefore have suffered the effects of breathing in the material.

Warren Pennington of the Health and Safety Executive labelled the incident "shocking".
