Finger loss to lead to compensation pursuit?

An accident at work that caused a woman to lose two fingers may result in her pursuing a claim for compensation.

Karen Schoelzel's entire index digit and most the middle finger on her left hand were amputated as she operated machinery in premises owned by Arrow Flexible Packaging in Golborne, Greater Manchester, in November last year.

At the time of the incident, Ms Schoelzel was replacing a rubber insert under the piece of equipment when it switched on unexpectedly and came into contact with her hand.

Due to the severity of her injuries, the 53-year-old has not yet been able to return to work, meaning she could take legal action on the grounds of both her ordeal and loss of earnings.

"I am affected by how I do everyday things such as gardening, shopping and even eating, because using cutlery is difficult," she commented.

This comes after an unnamed man suffered similar injuries in an accident at work at Dugdale Nutrition in Clitheroe in June 2009.
