Fatal road traffic accidents are on the rise in the UK, new official statistics published by the government have shown.
According to data released by the Department for Transport, the second quarter of 2011 saw a seven per cent hike in the number of deaths on the country's roads in comparison to the corresponding period last year.
This represents the first time this has grown since 2006 and figures show 500 drivers died as a result of collisions between April and June this year, against 467 in the same three months in 2010.
It is thought by some experts that spending cuts in areas such as road safety and policing could be causing this trend, but Mike Penning - road safety minister and MP for Hemel Hempstead - has defended the administration.
"Britain has some of the safest roads in the world and year-on-year comparisons show that road deaths continue to fall," he said.
