An accident at work that resulted in a woman sustaining a serious injury to her left arm could lead to her pursuing a claim for compensation.
The unnamed employee was operating a potato blanching machine at premises managed by Bakkavor Foods - a food firm with more than 19,000 workers across the world - in Wigan in June last year when her limb became caught in the moving parts of the equipment.
An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that the 22-year-old's arm got stuck in between a conveyor belt and rollers within the machine because these dangerous components were not properly guarded.
Consequently, she had to take eight months off from her job due to the effects of a dislocated elbow and three broken bones.
Helen Mansfield of the HSE commented: "Sadly the machine had been operated without a guard for more than ten years, making it almost inevitable that someone would be injured."
